About Us
Seniors on the Move is an initiative of BEST (Better Environmentally Sound Transportation). BEST is a nonprofit charitable organization with the mission to activate better transportation options through initiatives, collaboration and leadership. Click here to learn more about BEST.
The current iteration of Seniors on the Move is a three-year systems-change project led by seniors to improve and increase transportation options for older adults across the Province. This project is funded by the Vancouver Foundation, by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, and United Way BC.
In partnership with TransLink, HandyDART and ICBC, BEST also offers a variety of workshops, including transit training, focused on helping seniors get around Metro Vancouver without relying on vehicle ownership for every trip. Learn more about current workshop offerings.
Seniors on the Move (SOTM) 2.0
Begun in 2021, SOTM 2.0 is focused on improving transportation options for seniors across BC through a systems-change lens. SOTM recognizes that we are experiencing an aging population, with 25% of those in BC being 65+ in less than 10 years, and that many of us will need and want alternatives to driving. Like SOTM 1.0, the project relies on a Seniors Advisory Council for guidance from lived experience as well as professional and volunteer-based expertise in the fields of transportation, road safety, and active transportation. Project partners include United Way BC, TransLink, ICBC, Doctors of BC, Jewish Family Services, Langley Seniors Resources Society, South Vancouver Neighbourhood House, and more.
Current initiatives include a province-wide survey on the experiences of seniors getting around, a short documentary-style video highlighting challenges and opportunities for seniors getting around with screenings planned for 2022, and a series of community dialogues on driving cessation and the current lack of alternatives to driving, particularly in small towns and rural BC.
We also recently held a province-wide virtual dialogue on seniors transportation and driver cessation on September 28, 2021- Life Without Driving. Read the report here.
